Canadian Rulings Revise Law on Internet Libel

OTTAWA — The Supreme Court of Canada released two decisions in libel suits against major newspapers on Tuesday that increase protections for journalists, bloggers and others in Canada, a country whose libel laws are unusually stringent.

In the rulings, the court agreed with those who have contended that the country’s libel laws are not only more restrictive than those in the United States, but even those in Britain, which are known for their severity.
